After a long time Indian cricket fans got to witness MS Dhoni finish a game for the country in the one-day format. Dhoni led India to a series-equalling victory over Australia in the second one-day international in Adelaide.
It was a typical Dhoni knock as he took his time initially to settle down even as Kohli attacked from the other end. Chasing 299 on a tough pitch for the batsmen, Dhoni made a crucial partnership with captain Virat Kohli and Dinesh Kartik to take India over the line just four balls to spare.
The partnership between Dhoni and Kohli put the pressure back on the Aussies. The duo added 82 runs. Kohli went on to score his 39th ODI hundred (104) but got out at a time when India still need 57 of 38 balls.
It was a situation of calm head, and who better than Dhoni to be at the crease. The-37-year-old-struggled towards the end of his innings as he kept running out of breath in his hot conditions in Adelaide but still managed to carry on and win the game.
But apart from his valiant match winning half century, the former India captain was in the news for a wrong reason. A footage on social media suggests that Dhoni didn’t complete one of his singles, and the umpire didn’t notice that and called the end of the over.
After the game Yuzvendra Chahal, who wasn’t included in the playing XI yet again, got to interview Kohli in which he asked what it was like to build a partnership with Dhoni, the finisher.
“It’s important to take the game slow and strike rotation becomes very important and then when Mahi bhai comes on the crease, he talks a lot while batting and that helps a lot. When you are contemplating whether you should take a risk or not, he comes around and says there’s a lot of time in the game so it calms you down.
“We bat very well together because we take the game forward and get runs from the middle. There was a phase in the middle of 4-5 overs where I attacked so those calculated risks had to be taken.
“This is why you have been selected for the Indian team because you have to do that so that is something that should be worked upon mentally and I think a lot about it that if the team is in a problematic situation, I can get the team out and get the victory. When you are mentally convinced, you are able to perform on the field,” Kohli said in the interview.
