The main character of the film Murad (Ranveer Singh) is the son of slum in Mumbai. He lives with his mother, father, grandmother and brother in a small house. Meanwhile, Murad’s father Aftab (Vijay Raj), who is a driver, brought his second wife to his house. Under such a critical situation, graduate student Murad is speechless.
Western Rap Music fan, Murad’s lover Safina (Alia Bhat), is a medical college student. Safina is very active with her boyfriend. If she notices any other woman around Murad, she used to become restless. She is a jealous, raging girlfriend that you will never want but in the same time her approving smile will be all you need to get through the life. Murad also has several friends. One of them is also involved in the crime world.
Among these, one day Murad’s father broke his leg. The burden of running the family came to Murad. He is forced to take a job as a driver in a higher family’s house where his father used to work. Besides he continues to study. One day, suddenly, he went to college and watched the rap singer MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi). Then he met with Sher. Murad’s life changed. Basically, under the supervision of Sher, slum boy Murad becomes the rap singer ‘Gully Boy’. His father didn’t agree with his profession as a rap singer. We all know that Ranveer Singh is a energetic star. Ranveer is carrying the movie on his shoulders. His expression, the style of speaking, is absolutely perfect. Alia Bhatt is also very versatile in the role of Safina. She proved her talent once again. Safina loves Murad very much.
Kalki Koechlin is portraying a foreign music teacher in the film. Even though for a little while, her presence on the screen will draw your attention. Bijoy Raj’s performance in Aftab’s character is also admirable.
Director Zoya Akhtar highlighted each character in different styles. He showed the difference between the rich and the poor. But consciously avoided political debate. But in some places the story of the picture can be guessed. Cinematography is quite interesting.
Song, more specifically, the wealth of this movie is rap music. The rap lyrics are formed from the pain of life. And the rap burst out like a bomb, with Ranveer’s mouth. So ‘Asli Hip Hop’, ‘Azadi’, ‘Apna Time Ayega’ and the other rap songs of this movie are mind blowing.
